Zapping Away Fat With Lasers:

The medical profession is constantly trying to come up with procedures that mitigate pain and are less invasive than a full-fledged cosmetic surgery. There is Botox® which takes care of the pain associated with a facial surgery or a neck surgery and lasers that take care of excess fat in various parts of the body, etc.

In November 2006, the food and drug administration approved a technique known as SmartLipo laseripolysis or laser-assisted
liposuction. This technique suctions off the fat present in a person’s body by melting it away through lasers. However, it can only remove small pockets of fat.

When the ray of laser is fired, the fat in the targeted area melts tightening the skin in its wake. The
plastic surgeon cleans away the fat that has been melted after this procedure allowing the patient to see how effective the surgery has been.

Any residual fat is absorbed into the body, to be discharged later through the lymphatic system. As the incisions made border on the miniscule there are no stitches involved and the swelling, bleeding and bruising is also minimal.

The type of
liposuction also requires a local anesthetic rather than the general anesthetic that is used for a regular liposuction, thus reducing the costs involved.

But there are certain limitations of the SmartLipo procedure which make it a surgery secondary to the regular
lipoplasty. For one, it is only available in Brazil and Europe and will take another two years for American doctors to have access to its methods.

Another drawback of this type of
liposuction is its application, which is limited to the face, neck, arms and breast area. A traditional liposuction procedure is thus recommended by most cosmetic surgeons where body sculpting is concerned.
