When laser assisted lipolysis came onto the cosmetic surgery scene it brought about a major revaluation of fat removal and body contouring processes like liposuction and tummy tuck procedures like a mini-abdominoplasty.
Devices like Cynosure’s SmartLipo™, Sciton's ProLipo™ and more recently Osyris’ Lipotherm™ have enabled plastic surgeons to offer their patients less painful avenues to shape their body. These devices are classified as equipment applied in laser assisted lipolysis.
Laser assisted lipolysis devices target laser beams to those areas of the body containing localized fat deposits. The concentrated beams dissolve fat by liquefying them. While the SmartLipo™ device uses a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser fiber to rupture fat cells and suck them through a cannula, the Lipotherm™ device takes care of localized fat using a smaller concentration of laser beams (980 nm).
These devices however accomplish the liposuction procedure without any need for surgery. They are considerably safer than fat dissolving injections as well, which are yet facing the wrath of the FDA.
For the summer season, these non-invasive liposuction laser treatments are a great option because they do away with a lot of the discomfort patients face during recovery from a liposuction surgery.
A point to remember however, is the limited areas these laser assisted devices can treat which include only small areas like the calves, lower back, knees, etc.
